Breastfeeding...

Recently around I have been reading comments and posts about different cafe's/business's being quite rude to breastfeeding mothers.
Asking a mother to cover up or go into a restroom is not only rude but it is unacceptable!
Unfortunately it is something that happens only to often, some business owners and staff are uneducated but others are just plain ignorant!

I was always avoiding going out so I didn't have to breastfeed in public and it was possibly one of the stupidest things I ever did!
I hated being at home all the time and I got very uptight about breastfeeding when I had to.
My milk dried up and I lasted until Toby was 6 weeks and had to stop.

As a mother instead of doing something that is one of the most natural things in the world, I let how others would perceive it, dictate how I felt about it.

It is upsetting to see how many people don't support the breastfeeding mother, the comments that have been said on these issues by not only mothers who have more than likely never breastfeed a day in their life but also by fathers that explain that their partner never breastfed in public so why should anyone else or to go and sit in a toilet, ARE YOU FOR REAL?! why don't you go and eat your meal in the toilet you ignorant little twerp!!

Would you rather have a screaming hungry child near you in a cafe or restaurant or a happy quiet baby happily feeding?
Breastfeeding doesn't mean a woman getting her boob's out for everyone to see, It doesn't mean you have to sit there and watch and it also doesn't mean you have to do it when you have children.

We need to start supporting each other more, even though I know that this is a personal choice but people are starting to have children younger and younger every year and a huge percentage of these girls are not breastfeeding because they aren't educating us enough.
I went to a breastfeeding clinic but even with going to that I didn't feel confident enough to do it, Hell, I didn't feel confident breastfeeding for over a week after my son was born.

I am making a promise to myself and my unborn daughter that this time I will try harder, I will seek the right help when/if I need it and I wont let what other people think dictate what is a perfectly natural thing.

  1. I saw some where. I think tv or something where they made it ok for women to breast feed in public. or they make those smock looking things that you put over you while the baby breast feeds. that way noone sees anything. they just wonder why you have the smock like thing on. :D

  4. Hello Jayme!
I'm just stopping by from the Aloha Friday Blog Hop. I now follow your blog via GFC. My baby boy is only five weeks old and I breast fed him for the first week but my milk supply never came in, I only had colostrum but that's supposed to be 'liquid gold' apparently so I'm glad he got that. He was 9lbs 8oz so if I was still breastfeeding I think he'd be constantly latched on, he's such a big boy! Good luck with breastfeeding this time around, don't let any people be rude to you if out in public. Breastfeeding should not be taboo anymore, it's the most natural thing and I'd rather a child was fed and happy than roaring it's lungs out - people would complain about that too of course! I'm looking forward to reading your future posts :)

  5. Found your blog through the blog hop! :) I'm your newest follower! :)

I'm a breastfeeding Mama as well and although I've never felt like I wasn't welcome, I also struggle finding places to nurse!

I usually just go back to the car if we are out and about.. it's our safe place! Ha. :)

  8. I also went to a breastfeeding course when I was pregnant and the sum of the course was "don't worry about anything, breastfeeding is natural and everything will be fine". My milk took 5 days to come in and for the first 3 months my baby took an hour to feed and fed every 2 hours. Needless to say, I got over the 'embarrassed in public' thing really quickly. I fed her with a shield and standing up right from day 1 so this helped me do whatever I needed to do while feeding her, even if it was shopping. I would use a cover if I could get it to work but if I couldn't, I just used the side of my sweater.
Breastfeeding moms are now seen as super moms to me! I put up with a lot of weird looks and mostly the older folks that would have the nerve to comment on how I should 'go in the back room'. It takes a strong woman to breastfeed and you are 100% correct in saying that we should be more supportive towards eachother.
I'm glad you spoke out on this!

  10. It is really hard isn't it? I have found it so difficult for the last 6 months and haven't really enjoyed it like everyone says you will!
I fed my baby from bottles in the first few months when I had to go out in public but then just got so sick of expressing and sorting it out I just gave up and started breast feeding! I never felt like she fed very well when we were out though. The idea of a shield/apron like some of the people have been saying is a good idea.
I hope it goes well with you this time around :)

  11. Hi! Followed you over from The Things We Find Inside blog hop. Great post! I agree that too often Mom's are being asked not to breastfeed certain places or get dirty looks, etc when breastfeeding in public. I have a 16 month old and to be perfectly honest I have never breast fed her in public. I also felt uncomfortable, probraly because of the way society makes us Mom's feel about doing it in public. I have always managed to find nursing rooms when I am out, will nurse in my car, or just give her a bottle (as she was ok with both), but I wish I was more confident and able to breast feed in public. Now following you via GFC.

  14. TOTALLY agree with this post... why must we feel embarrassed to breastfeed in public? It's a natural thing. Bear is 4 1/2 months old and I still try to stay home for feedings because it's such a hassle in public and he doesn't take a bottle well. I wish people were more accepting of breastfeeding in public...I'm always afraid of getting rude looks and being shunned for feeding my child. :(
